How to Measure Your Windows for Blinds – A Simple Guide
Getting the perfect fit for your blinds starts with accurate measuring. Whether you're ordering made-to-measure blinds for your living room, kitchen or bedroom, a few careful measurements are all it takes to get it right.
While this is a general guide, we always recommend that you review the supplier website in case they do things a little differently.
Recess or Exact Fit – Which Should You Choose?
Recess Fit: This is when your blinds sit inside the window frame. It’s a clean, built-in look and a great option if you have a deep window reveal. Perfect for blackout blinds or roller blinds where minimal light bleed is important.
Exact Fit (also known as ‘outside mount’): This is where the blind is fitted to cover the entire window, typically overlapping the frame. This gives extra coverage and works well if the window recess is shallow or uneven.
Tools You’ll Need
- Metal tape measure – for accuracy
- Pen and paper – to record your measurements
- Step stool – if measuring tall or hard-to-reach windows
What to Measure
For a Recess Fit: Measure the width and drop of the recess in three places (top, middle, bottom for width; left, centre, right for drop). Record the smallest measurement in each case to ensure the blind fits inside comfortably.
For an Exact Fit: Measure the area you want the blind to cover. Add at least 5cm on each side to ensure good coverage and light control.
